- Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu 4 Days

The Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu 4 days / 3 nights is one of the least crowded trekking routes in the Peruvian Andes and has been recognized by National Geographic as one of the “dream hikes” in the world. It is an alternative route to the Classic Inca Trail, ideal for travelers looking for an off the beaten path experience: pristine nature, Quechua communities and original sections of the Inca Trail, ending at the citadel of Machu Picchu.
This Ancascocha trekking route is perfect for travelers who want to:
- Enjoy spectacular scenery: high-Andean lakes, deep valleys, high mountain passes and views of Apu Salkantay and other snow-capped peaks.
- Live an authentic cultural experience, walking through rural communities that preserve their Andean traditions.
- Escape the crowds on a little-known route to Machu Picchu, often called the “hidden trail to Machu Picchu”.
As a local operator based in Cusco, Life Expeditions runs the Ancascocha Trek Cusco – Machu Picchu in small groups, prioritizing safety, personal service and responsible tourism with Andean communities.
Our trekking guides are experts from the area, with many years of experience in high-mountain routes and ongoing training in first aid, and many of them are sons and daughters of native Quechua communities in the region. We work with muleteers, cooks and local families, so that each departure is not only a trip for the traveler, but also a way to boost the local economy and create opportunities for more people in the Andes.
- Duration: 4 days / 3 nights
- Maximum altitude: approx. 4,650 m (Huayanay Pass)
- Accommodation: 2 nights camping + 1 night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes
- Difficulty level: Challenging (multi-day high-altitude trek; we recommend at least 2–3 nights of acclimatization in Cusco before starting).
