The One Day Inca Trail is a fantastic hike, but due to permit restrictions and the physical demands of the single-day trek, preparation is key for a successful experience.

1. Permits and Booking Urgency

• Permit Requirement: This route requires an official Inca Trail Permit, which is different from a standard Machu Picchu ticket. Only 250 short permits (including guides and porters) are issued daily.
• Book Well in Advance: Due to the severe limit on permits, the Short Inca Trail 1 Day must be booked at least 3 to 4 months in advance (even earlier for peak season dates like June and July). Last-minute booking is almost impossible.
• Passport Data: Your permit is linked to your passport. You must provide your exact passport details at the time of booking and carry the original passport with you on the day of the hike.

2. Physical Preparation and Altitude

• Moderate Challenge: This is a rewarding, yet demanding, 6 to 7-hour hike that includes challenging ascents (especially to the Sun Gate). You should be in good physical condition.
• Aclimatization: Although the trail itself is at a lower elevation than Cusco, you start early and finish late. Spend at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the trek to ensure you are well acclimatized to the altitude.

3. Logistics and What to Expect

• Early Start: The tour involves a very early morning departure (often around 4:00 AM) to catch the train to KM 104 and maximize the time on the trail.
• Weather: Be prepared for varied weather. The trail goes through the cloud forest, meaning sun, rain, and humidity are possible on the same day.

Given the nature of this one-day trek, packing light but smart is essential. Focus on comfort, rain protection, and vital documents.

1. Documentation (Crucial)

• Original Passport: Absolutely mandatory. It will be checked multiple times (train, trail entrance, Machu Picchu entrance).
• Immigration Card (TAM): If applicable, keep it with your passport.
• Inca Trail Permit Printout: Although your guide carries the main list, having your confirmation adds security.

2. Clothing & Footwear

• Hiking Boots or Shoes: Broken-in, comfortable, and with good ankle support, as the trail includes stone steps and varied terrain.
• Layers of Clothing: A t-shirt, a fleece or lightweight jacket, and a rain/wind shell (jacket). Weather changes quickly in the cloud forest.
• Lightweight Waterproof Poncho: Highly recommended, especially during the rainy season (October – March).
• Comfortable Hiking Socks.

3. Gear & Accessories

• Small Day Pack (20-25L): Enough for water, snacks, and extra layers.
• Water or Hydration Reservoir: At least 1.5 – 2 liters of water.
• Sun Protection: Sunscreen (50 SPF+), sunglasses, and a hat/cap.
• Insect Repellent: Essential, especially near Wiñay Wayna and Machu Picchu.
• Cash: Peruvian Soles for optional items (snacks, use of restrooms along the train ride).
